Why Organic?

A Thousand Fibers brings you the ultimate in super soft, versatile clothing made from organic bamboo and organic cotton. Our fiber sources are renewable, fast growing, and no pesticides or harmful chemicals are used in production. Cotton fabrics are well known and appreciated for many reasons. The less familiar bamboo fabrics are incredibly soft and breathable. They have the additional benefits of naturally occurring anti-microbial qualities. Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for people with sensitive skin. The molecular structure of bamboo fiber contains many micro-gaps and micro-holes. This gives the fabric the ability to wick moisture away and help the body feel cooler. Think of it as free air conditioning from nature. As an added benefit, organic bamboo has UV protection properties.

If you haven't had the opportunity to experience bamboo fabric, you might think "scratchy!" It's really quite the opposite. Fabric made from organic bamboo is incredibly silky, soft and has a smooth, luxurious feel. A garment made from 100% bamboo fiber will drape similar to silk. Despite its silky quality, bamboo fabric is very strong and durable. Many of our bamboo clothing items are made from a 70% bamboo, 30% organic cotton knit blend, perfect for fashionable casual wear. We offer a selection of quality bamboo fiber t-shirts for men and women in a variety of colors. As we move into fall 2007, we'll be adding hooded sweatshirt jackets for men and women and long sleeve shirts. Also coming soon will be bamboo shirts for children, bamboo onesies for babies, and bamboo pajamas.

Bamboo is a prolific plant with one of the fastest growth records on the planet. Bamboo can grow up to one meter or more in a day and can be harvested in four to five years. By comparison, a pine forest grown for commercial purposes can take 25 to 30 years before harvesting can take place. For textile production, bamboo is crushed, pulped and the cellulose is extracted to make fiber. At first glance this fiber is similar to cotton. It is then spun into yarn or thread and from there is made into fabric. Although bamboo is sometimes mistaken for a tree, it is actually a member of the grass family and is regenerative. Bamboo does not deplete the soil and in many cases has been known to actually improve soil conditions by preventing erosion. Bamboo contributes to better air quality by its outstanding performance with carbon dioxide intake and oxygen output. You may be concerned that using bamboo for clothing production might not leave enough food for the Pandas. Well, don't worry! There are over 1200 species of bamboo in the world. Bamboo used to make textiles is known as Phyllostachys, a timber bamboo. This is not the species that the Pandas eat to survive.

We provide only organically grown, biodegradable, and recycled fibers. Our bamboo and organic cotton garments are not just good for the Earth and its inhabitants; they feel great, look great and are a welcome addition to any wardrobe. So, why not make bamboo fabrics your new fashion choice?
